Citation

A renowned economist, development banker, and institution builder, Professor Benedict Okey Oramah, GCON, is one of the most influential figures in Africa’s contemporary economic history. Widely respected as a global financial statesman, he has played a transformative role in reshaping Africa’s trade and financial landscape and advancing the continent’s economic integration agenda.

At a time when many African economies remained heavily dependent on external financing, foreign-controlled trade systems, and fragmented regional markets, Professor Oramah emerged as a leading advocate for African-owned solutions to African economic challenges. His vision, leadership, and commitment to self-reliance have helped redefine the continent’s approach to trade, finance, and development.

As President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Professor Oramah transformed the institution into one of Africa’s most impactful development finance organisations. Through strategic leadership, disciplined execution, and an unwavering commitment to Africa’s long-term interests, he significantly expanded the Bank’s capital base, increased its lending capacity, and positioned it as a leading catalyst for industrialisation, trade development, and economic growth across the continent.

Under his stewardship, African businesses gained unprecedented access to trade finance and international markets, governments secured critical support for infrastructure and development projects, and regional economic communities found a dependable financial partner to advance integration and prosperity. The impact of these interventions has contributed to the creation and preservation of millions of jobs across Africa.

One of Professor Oramah’s most enduring achievements has been his pioneering role in laying the financial foundations for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Long before the agreement became operational, he was already building the institutional and financial architecture necessary to support intra-African trade. Under his leadership, Afreximbank became the largest financier and institutional supporter of AfCFTA, providing trade finance facilities, guarantee instruments, market intelligence, and payment infrastructure essential for cross-border commerce.

Among these innovations is the groundbreaking Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), which has significantly reduced Africa’s dependence on external currencies and foreign clearing systems, making trade among African nations faster, easier, and more cost-effective. The strategic significance of this achievement for the continent’s future cannot be overstated.

Beyond trade and finance, Professor Oramah demonstrated exceptional leadership during periods of continental and global crisis. During commodity price shocks, financial disruptions, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Afreximbank became Africa’s financial first responder. Through emergency funding facilities, vaccine financing initiatives, medical supply procurement programmes, and economic stabilisation interventions, the institution provided critical support to governments and businesses across the continent at a time when many international institutions remained hesitant.

What distinguishes Professor Oramah as a true international icon is not merely the scale of resources mobilised under his leadership, but the philosophy that has guided his work—a steadfast belief in African ownership, African institutions, and African solutions.

His influence extends well beyond banking into policy reform, institutional design, economic strategy, and global thought leadership. Governments, central banks, international organisations, and private sector leaders regularly seek his expertise on trade policy, industrial development, export competitiveness, and financial architecture. Through his advocacy and global engagements, he has helped reposition Africa in the global economic conversation—not as a peripheral player, but as a continent of immense opportunity, innovation, and strategic importance.

Across Africa and the international community, Professor Benedict Okey Oramah is synonymous with visionary leadership, institutional excellence, and transformational impact. Through his remarkable achievements, he has demonstrated that when Africa builds and controls strong institutions, it strengthens its capacity to shape its own future.

His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of African economists, bankers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to think boldly, act confidently, and believe deeply in the continent’s potential.
