HLF Role Model Awards

On Saturday, December 11, 2021, Hallmarks of Labour Foundation celebrated its 25th Anniversary and 2020/2021 Role Model Awards at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos. The event brought together distinguished Nigerians from all works of life, to celebrate ten great Nigerians who by dint of hard work and moral uprightness have implanted their footprints on the sands of time. They are men and women whose achievements have become shining examples for the younger generation to emulate. The occasion was the celebration of the Foundation’s 25th Anniversary and Role Model Awards.

The Chairman of the Occasion, Chief Eleazar Chukwuemeka Anyaoku in his welcome address, congratulated the board of trustees for their ability to sustain the great work of the foundation for twenty-five years, and more importantly for keeping to the tradition of honouring great people. He also urged the powers that be in our country and in all tiers of government, to recognize that our current Federal system of government will not lead the country to the achievement of our national aspirations.

The Host of the event, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation has called on Nigerians to continue to uphold the very important virtues of integrity, hard work, honesty and patriotism, as these virtues are needed in Nigeria’s quest to become a leader in the world, that is respected by all.

According to the Minister, the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation has consistently promoted the virtues of integrity, hard work and patriotism, adding that its programmes and projects have made important contributions to the development of the country.

Dr Onu said that the foundation has made a tremendous impact in sustainable development in the areas of Secondary & Tertiary Education Scholarship Scheme; Women & Youth Empowerment Programmes, Donations of Facilities & Equipment to deserving indigent schools, and Community Outreaches.

He further called for the support of well-meaning Nigerians and organisations to partner with the foundation to help propel their activities.

In his remarks, Executive Secretary and founder of HLF, chief Mrs Patricia Otuedon- Arawore, said that twenty-five years is a long time in the life of a Non-Governmental Organization, with the challenge of the operating environment, particularly with no external funding from either government or any international agency.

She added with confidence that Nigeria is a reservoir of people; men and women who against all odds have embraced hard work, with lofty achievements and dignity that can match or excel their contemporaries elsewhere in the world.Hence the need to salvage the image of the Country against the negative role models, dishonest practices, the Hallmark of Labour Role Model was conceived to boast exemplary men and women. Ten great Nigerians were presented with the Hallmarks of Labour Role Model award (HLR), under the following categories:

HLF - UMARU SHEHU Life-Time Achievement Award	Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed - For Consistent Advocacy for Positive Change within the University System
HLF ROLE MODEL AWARD	Professor Oladapo Alabi Ladipo - For outstanding contributions in the field of Medicine
HLF ROLE MODEL AWARD	Dr Sonny Folurunso Kuku - For outstanding contributions in the field of Medicine

HLF - DR CHRISTOPHER KOLADE AWARD	Mrs StellaMarie Awani - For Excellence in Leadership and Professionalism in the Media
HLF AWARD	Lagos State Government - For Exemplary Leadership and Transparency in Public Health, Management and Control of Covid-19 Outbreak in Nigeria.

Speaking after receiving the award, Sanwo-Olu said the award will continue to challenge him to do more for the people.

“I will say with every sense of responsibility that I am the least qualified because I am the youngest among the awardees. What it shows to us is that we, the younger generation have something to look forward to.

“It is something that will continue to challenge us and ensure that we do our very best looking at the level of commitment that our fathers, mothers have dedicated to this country. Hallmarks award is indeed an outstanding award. We are truly honoured.”

Onu commended the Lagos State Governor for the effort he put in to manage and control COVID-19 during the pandemic period.

HLF Young Achievers’ Awards For the Best-Performing School IN WASSCE

In line with our main objective, to nurture confident youths positioned to lead the change for a greater Nigeria; the Foundation continues to recognize outstanding young Nigerian achievers and institutions. The purpose of this exercise is to promote excellence, hard work and healthy rivalry within our schools Nationwide. Air Force Secondary School, Ikeja, Christ the King College, Abuja and Total Education Development Academy, Aba received the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation Young Achievers Award for emerging the best performing school in the WASSCE for 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, also donated a science kit to the school in support of the Foundation’s efforts and in recognition of the schools’ excellent performance in their examination, adding that such gestures will encourage the pupils to work harder. He concluded by congratulating the awardees and the Executive Secretary of the Foundation, Mrs Patricia Otuedon-Arawore for the great work they are doing in the nation.

The HLF was established in 1996 to promote honesty, hard work and integrity through character emulation and role modelling. So far 81 Nigerians have been honoured with the awards since 1997.

Members of its Board of Trustees include Prof Umaru Shehu, Dr Christopher Kolade, Prof Grace Alele Williams, Prof Itse Sagay, Mrs Grace Giwa and Patricia Dede Otuedon-Arawore.
