Chief Abdul-Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi, SAN, GCON, was a distinguished legal practitioner, author, mentor, philanthropist, and fearless human rights activist.
He obtained his formal education in Nigeria and abroad and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1965, beginning what would become one of the most impactful legal careers in the nation’s history.
Legal Practice and Advocacy
After completing his legal training, Chief Fawehinmi established Gani Fawehinmi & Co. in Lagos. Over the years, he built the firm into one of Nigeria’s most prominent legal practices—widely known for defending the rights of disadvantaged individuals and groups against oppression and injustice.
Renowned for his courage and conviction, he frequently took on human and civil rights cases—often pro bono—pursuing justice even to the Supreme Court. His unwavering commitment earned him the enduring title: “Senior Advocate of the Masses.”
Scholarship and Intellectual Contributions
A highly cerebral scholar, Chief Fawehinmi initiated the compilation of comprehensive Law Reports on Nigeria, covering legal developments from the colonial era. These publications have become invaluable and accessible reference materials for:

- Legal practitioners
- Researchers and general readers
He also established the Gani Fawehinmi Library, reputed to be one of the largest private libraries in Nigeria, housing over one million volumes and archival materials, including rare newspapers and magazines dating back to the early 1970s.
