His Excellency, Professor Placid Chike Njoku, is a distinguished academic, animal scientist, educationalist, agricultural and environmental expert, and accomplished administrator.

He obtained his first degree in Nigeria and went on to earn both his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in the United States. During a sabbatical at the AFRC Rolin Research Institute in the United Kingdom, he advanced the study of Vitamin C supplementation in heat-stressed poultry—a practice that is now globally adopted in animal husbandry.

For over 16 years, Professor Njoku was actively engaged in teaching, research, and extension services at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. He later became the Foundation Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike (now Michael Okpara University of Agriculture), where he established governance structures, academic frameworks, research policies, and administrative systems that earned national recognition for excellence.

Leadership in Higher Education and Policy Development

Professor Njoku further served as:

  • Pioneer Director of Research & Postgraduate Development
  • Pioneer Director of Quality Assurance

at the National Universities Commission (NUC), where he implemented accreditation standards and strengthened quality assurance mechanisms across Nigerian universities.

As the Founding President of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, he played a pivotal role in:

  • Advancing livestock research
  • Contributing to the establishment of the Department of Animal Husbandry Services
  • Supporting the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development
