A highly respected Scholar, Administrator, First Nigerian Professor of Rheumatology and for many years the only Trainer in the specialty in West Africa; Olufemi Oladipo Adelowo obtained his higher education in Nigeria and abroad. He holds the MBBS [Ibadan]; Doctor of Medicine [National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria]; and the Fellowships of many professional Colleges and Academies in Nigeria and overseas.

Our Celebrant’s career in academia dates back to 1975, when he was appointed Senior House Officer/Registrar in the Department of Medicine of University College Hospital, Ibadan. Soon after his elevation to the rank of Senior Registrar in the Renal Unit of the Department in 1979, he moved abroad for about two years to serve as Honorary Registrar at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, Rheumatology, London, England.
Back in Nigeria – his skills in high demand — he was successively engaged as Lecturer/Consultant Physician at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin; Consultant Physician/Rheumatologist up to Senior Lecturer/Consultant Physician Rheumatologist, Ade-Ola Specialist Hospital,
Ogbomoso, Oyo State; and Associate Professor/Consultant, College of Medicine [Head Rheumatologist], Ogun State [Olabisi Onabanjo] University, Sagamu.
After a Leave of Absence as Consultant Rheumatologist at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, he was back to Sagamu as Professor of Medicine & Consultant Rheumatologist at the University Teaching Hospital, from where he retired in 2012.
Presently, he is actively engaged as Professor of Medicine & Consultant Physician/Rheumatologist at the Lagos State University College of Medicine [LASUTH]; Locum Consultant Physician/Rheumatologist and Associate Lecturer; Lagos University Teaching Hospital [LUTH], and Consultant Physician/ Rheumatologist at an Arthrimed Specialist Clinic in Lagos.
Additionally, briefs from the Public Sector include Chairman, Governing Board, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso; Member, Federal Ministry of Health Standard Treatment Guidelines; and Member, Federal Ministry of Health Committee on Essential Drug List.
The First Physician in West Africa to qualify as a Clinical Rheumatologist; our celebrant has several publications in his name and some 60 Nigerian Rheumatologists mentored by him. Soon expected from his Publishers are: Rheumatoid Arthritis Registry In Nigeria; Serologies in Nigerian Lupus Patients; and Rheumatic & Musculoskeletal Diseases in a Private Rheumatology Clinic — The First 5000 Patients.
He has been widely acknowledged for his career achievements. Among these acknowledgements are: Master of the American College of Rheumatology [the highest award worldwide in that specialty]; and Master of the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology.
His multiple Fellowships include the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, West African College of Physicians, American College of Rheumatology, Royal College of Physicians Edinburg, Royal College of Physicians London, and Academy of Medical Sciences of Nigeria. He was the Pioneer Vice-President [and later President], African League of Associations of Rheumatology, and Executive Committee Chairman of the International League of Associations for Rheumatology
He is married with children.
