A Physician, Professor of Preventive & Social Medicine, and Administrator, Allen Bankole Oladunmoye Olukayode Oyediran was born and raised in Lagos where he had his basic education at the Church Missionary Society [CMS] Grammar School and King’s College.
Appointed a Lecturer at UI and Consultant Physician at UCH, Ibadan in 1970, he became a Professor of Preventive & Social Medicine six years later; and served as Head of the Department for two terms. He took a leave of absence from UI for the position of Executive Secretary, West African Postgraduate Medical College — an inter-governmental organization responsible for the organization of postgraduate professional training programmes, and qualifying examinations for doctors to become specialists.
He has served as an External Examiner in Community Health for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations at various universities in Nigeria, Ghana and the West Indies, Examiner, Public Health for the NPMC and the first Chief Examiner in Community Health for the WACP. He has many scientific publications in books and learned journals, and has served on the Editorial Board of several medical journals.
Back at UI, he served as Chief Medical Director (ad interim) of UCH, Ibadan; and in 1991 was named Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan.
His other strategic appointments include: Director (Africa), Malarone Donation Programme based in Nairobi, Kenya; Chairman, Nigeria National Certification Committee on Guinea-Worm Disease Eradication, which brought about the extinction of the disease in Nigeria; and Chairman, Nigeria National Technical Advisory Committee on Epidemic Diseases, which led the crusade against out-breaks of Yellow Fever, Lassa Fever, Cerebrospinal Meningitis, Cholera, among others, in the country.
Since his retirement from public office, he co-founded the Nigeria Network for Awareness and Action for Environmental Health [NINAAFEH] – successively serving as CEO and currently, Board of Trustees Chairman.
A Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International ; former Member, Council of the International Epidemiological Association, several Expert Committees of the World Health Organization, and the World Federation for Education & Research in Public Health, Professor Allen Oyediran is also a Life Fellow, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria; Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, London; Fellow & past Overseas Adviser, Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh; Foundation Fellow, West African College of Physicians; and Fellow, University of Ibadan.
He is happily married with children to Mrs. Omotola Olubunmi Oyediran [Nee Awolowo]
